Passport English A1 (Pasaporte Inglés A1)
The project "Pasaporte Inglés A1" is indeed an acronym that stands for "Proyecto para el aprendizaje significativo mediante actividades pedagógicas orientadas a temáticas [de otras áreas] en inglés, nivel A1". Although it has first been intended for 5th grade (primary school) students, this project will cover all primary section, that is from 1st to 5th grade, and will help level the English knowledge and performance of our students, as it is mandated by the National Government and the Ministry of Education.
This project is a strategy for our students to feel identified and motivated to participate in this curricular innovation, and valued in the construction of their own reality, on a personal and social level. It also intends to grant and validate in our students the following rights:
1. To a quality education in different areas of knowledge.
2. To an active and participative education in the English language.
3. To culture and interculturality.
4. To globalization and global citizenship.
5. To open communication.
6. To the formation and upbringing in values of tolerance, respect, and peace.
7. To the formation of an analytical and critical mind.
The Ministry of Education in their Suggested Curriculum Structure 6th to 11th (MEN, 2016:14-16) proposes a methodology with four modules per year that present the following themes: Health, Democracy and Peace, Sustainability, and Globalization. These move progressively both vertically and horizontally. It also proposes a methodological route as follows: tasks, projects, and problem solving.
It is noteworthy that, very recently, the MEN (2017) has launched the Suggested Curriculum Structure Transition to 5th grade, which explicitly states the use of the CLIL approach (ibid, p. 15) and perfectly matches the methodology to be used in secondary and high school.
